BenQ selects Siano's Mobile TV Receiver Chip for Multiple DVB-H Mobile Phone ModelsThe two companies also collaborate in the DVB-H commercial trial in Taiwan, carried out by the country's leading TV broadcasters and mobile operators Taipei, Taiwan, 11 April 2007 – Siano Mobile Silicon, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for Mobile Digital TV (MDTV), announced today that it's SMS1010 multi-standard mobile TV receiver chip has been selected by Taiwan's leading brand consumer electronics maker BenQ to enable MDTV in BenQ's 3G and 2.5G mobile phones, targeting commercial launch in Europe and Asia in 2008. In addition, Siano and BenQ announced their joint participation in the DVB-H commercial trial currently undertaken in Taiwan. For the trial BenQ uses its P51 smartphones with DVB-H SDIO cards based on the Siano chip. The DVB-H trial in Taiwan is carried out by a collection of companies that include Public Television Service Foundation (PTS), mobile operators Chunghwa Telecomm (CHT) and Taiwan Mobile (TWM), Fareastone Communications (FET), terminal makers BenQ and Motorola, and multimedia software provider Cyberlink. "The purpose of the DVB-H trial in Taiwan, in addition to evaluating the coverage and network structures, and the DVB-H equipment and terminals is also to collect the end user feedback, and make the necessary preparations for the expected commercial roll-out of DVB-H," said Yuan-Hui Hu, President of PTS. "Therefore, it is extremely important that a world leading made-in-Taiwan brand such as BenQ participates in the trial, added Yuan-Hui Hu. Earlier this year, BenQ was unveiled as the fourth official sponsor for UEFA's Euro 2008™, Europe's soccer cup games for national teams, to be played in Austria and Switzerland in summer 2008. This soccer tournament is expected to be a major catalyst for accelerated deployment of DVB-H in Europe and the rest of the world. BenQ's DVB-H mobile phones currently under design use Siano's SMS1010, a high performance, low power, highly integrated single chip receiver for mobile TV. "BenQ views Mobile TV as a key growth engine in consumer electronics in general, and mobile phones in particular," said Dr. James Lee, Associate Vice President of BenQ. "Siano's solution emerged as the leading solution in our comprehensive qualifying evaluation, so it was an easy choice," added Dr. James Lee. "Being selected by a world leading brand such as BenQ is a great honor for Siano, and testament to the success of Siano's relentless commitment in providing our customers with the highest quality solutions for mobile TV", said Alon Ironi, CEO of Siano. "We look forward to helping BenQ join the growing club of mobile TV phone makers with extremely competitive models for both Europe and Asia. With DVB-T services already available in Taiwan, and with Taiwan being a 'GSM country', deployment of DVB-H for mobile is the natural and most effective next step," added Ironi. Siano and BenQ are set to join distinguished industry leaders, including the National Communication Council (NCC) of Taiwan, PTS, Telecom Italia Mobile, NDS, Marvell, Zoran, InterVideo, CyberLink, and others to discuss mobile TV at a Seminar jointly hosted by Siano and the Taiwan DTV committee on May 9th at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) in Taipei.
