Broadcom and BroadLight Team to Develop Highly Integrated Solutions for Residential Fiber-to-the-Premises Broadband Services
Broadcom has added the following News Release to its web site.
Date: 6/1/2004 9:01:00 AM
Broadcom Corporation, (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of highly integrated
semiconductor solutions enabling broadband communications, and BroadLight
Inc., a leading supplier of semiconductors, software and transceivers for
fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployments, today announced joint solutions that
will enable the rapid production of cost-effective FTTP optical network units
(ONUs) for delivering voice, video and data services to residential users.
FTTP optical network units enable end-users to benefit from the advantages
of a fiber access network by converting the light signal from a fiber strand
into an electrical signal for carrying voice, video and data to and throughout
the home. The deployment of FTTP provides much higher bandwidth and lower
latency for the delivery of superior quality, consolidated multimedia
services, including broadcast video, video-on-demand, traditional telephony
and Internet access. Compared to ADSL and cable modem broadband services,
FTTP solutions deliver more than ten times the bandwidth with longer reach at
similar cost points.
According to a recent IDC market report by Sterling Perrin, the worldwide
revenue forecast for fiber access equipment, which IDC refers to as the last
mile technology for bringing optical fiber to the customer, will increase at a
37% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), from $503 million in 2003 to
$2.4 billion by the end of 2008.
The Broadcom-BroadLight collaboration leverages both companies' expertise
in offering cost-optimized solutions for FTTP customer premises equipment
(CPE) and central office optical line terminators (OLT). The system design is
based on BroadLight's advanced broadband passive optical network (BPON)
transceivers and media access controllers (MACs) and Broadcom(R) high-speed
broadband access technologies for carrying voice, video and data to and
throughout the home. Broadcom and BroadLight are co-marketing the solutions
to telecommunications system vendors and service providers worldwide.
"FTTP deployments represent a strong movement by telecommunications
providers to address consumer demand for high-speed data, television and
telephony services," said Daniel Marotta, Group Vice President of Broadcom's
Broadband Communications Group. "Through our partnership with BroadLight, a
leader in the BPON component market, we can offer the most complete
semiconductor solutions for voice, video and data services to equipment
vendors of FTTP systems."
"We believe this partnership offers an unprecedented solution and
represents a significant milestone in the FTTP market's development," said
Andrew Vought, BroadLight's CEO. "As a leader in communications semiconductor
technology, Broadcom further strengthens BroadLight's leadership position in
the emerging PON market and, together, we are delivering the low-cost, high-
speed solutions that customers require."
BroadLight and Broadcom plan to showcase their integrated FTTP solutions at
Supercomm 2004 in Chicago, June 22 - 24, 2004, in Booth 22405.
